JEFFERSON – Mayor pro tem Victor Perot, in a brief statement late Tuesday, announced Jefferson Police Sgt. Florentino Perez has been placed in charge of the Jefferson Police Department, replacing Chief Jason Carroll, who resigned Monday.

Mr. Perez is the officer in charge until we can formally appoint him as Interim Chief at the next City Council meeting,” Perot wrote in an email to the Jimp. “The State would not recognize him as Interim until the Council votes on that title formally at the next meeting.

The next scheduled council meeting is July 21.

Perot was uncertain about when the search for a new chief will begin.

“[I’m] not sure about advertising for a new chief, yet,” Perot wrote.

Perez declined to comment when contacted Tuesday afternoon.

“At this time, I do not have a comment,” Perez said.

Perez joined JPD on April 19, 2016.
