JEFFERSON – JISD Superintendent Rob Barnwell announced at Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting that graduation will take place on Friday, May 29 at 8 p.m. at Jerry Bennett Field in W.F. Lockett Stadium.
A graduation parade will be Friday, May 22 in downtown Jefferson at 7 p.m.
Jefferson High School Principal Michael Walker explained to trustees meeting electronically plans to allow JHS seniors to have traditional graduation exercise but still comply with Gov. Greg Abbott’s social distancing guidelines.
“We’re going to spread things out,” Walker said.
Seniors will gather on the football field with their immediate families, but be separated from other family groups.
“This is a great idea,” Trustee Ned Frantangelo said.
“It’s the right thing to do,” Kevin Godfrey agreed.
Other trustees voiced their support, although Leah Cooper voiced concern about families maintaining distancing while entering and leaving the football field.
In other action, trustees authorized the administration to seek proposals to pave campus driveways, parking areas and repair the junior high gym roof.
Premium pay for district employees will end May 31, but the resolution adopted by the board authorizes the district to resume the time-and-a-half pay if another emergency arises.
Three additional categories were added to the stipend fee schedule.
The board also approved the Marion Central Appraisal District budget.
