County Adopts Resolution Banning Enforcement of ‘Unconstitutional’ Gun Laws

JEFFERSON – Commissioners unanimously voted in favor of a resolution Monday declaring Marion County a “Second Amendment Sanctuary County.”

The action followed a plea from local attorney Jim Finstrom for the court to put the resolution “on hold” until they could hear from first responders.

“I’m proud of it,” Pct. 4 Commissioner Charlie Treadwell said as he moved to adopt the resolution. “(I’m) very proud to live in a country that gives us the right of freedom of speech, the right to keep and bear arms.”

Treadwell cited Thomas Jefferson in endorsing the motion.

“Thomas Jefferson came from a country that knew that the people were losing freedom and had lost freedom and never had freedom,” Treadwell said. “He wanted to be part of this thing called America and give everybody freedom.”

Treadwell also asserted, “Thomas Jefferson wrote the Constitution when he was 33 years of age.” 

Finstrom asserted the resolution sent the wrong message.

“I have problems emphasizing the Second Amendment over the rest of the amendments in the Constitution,” Finstrom, who serves on the Jefferson City Council, said. “I have problems with the language sanctuary because it implies that those laws won’t be enforced in Marion County or enforced as strongly here as everywhere.”
