MOVIE REVIEW | “Dolittle”

Dolittle” as interpreted by director Stephen Gaghan and title actor Robert Downey Jr. is set in the 19th Century and comes across to the audience as a 19th Century story.

As in two previous adaptations of the 1920 British children’s book by Hugh Lofting, Dolittle is the guy who converses with animals. Dolittle has been played by Rex Harrison [1967] and Eddie Murphy [1998].

Harrison could sing and Murphy brought a hip contemporary twist to the tale. Downey carries sulking and pouting to new cinematic levels.
