Obituary | Jefferson “Cowboy” Thurmond

thurmanFuneral services for Mr. Jefferson “Cowboy” Thurmond of Jefferson, Texas will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday August 3, 2019 at Enon Baptist Church in Jefferson, Texas with Pastor Kenneth A. Edwards officiating. There will be a time of visitation from 1-6:30 pm on Friday August 2, 2019 at Burton Funeral Home in Jefferson, Texas. Mr. Thurmond passed away on Tuesday July 23, 2019.

Mr. Thurmond was born October 25, 1938 in Marion County, Texas to Arthur Thurmond and Essie Hooper Thurmond. Mr. Thurmond moved to Kansas City, Kansas at a young age and resided there for 30 years. While in Kansas, “Cowboy” started in the Rodeo profession and became a great, awesome, professional cowboy. He traveled to many different states training horses, riding bulls, and competing in rodeos with other well-known cowboys. He returned to his hometown of Jefferson, Texas in 1984. “Cowboy” was very well known, respected, and loved by many. He trained horses, providing horse-riding lessons to many Jeffersonians and became a lifetime member of the Jefferson Livestock Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Deloris Thurmond, and nine sisters and brothers. He is survived by two brothers, Leon Thurmond of Jefferson, Texas; Earl Thurmond of Houston, Texas; one sister Pearl Thurmond Patton of Houston, Texas; one aunt Elizabeth Choice of Kilgore, Texas; four generations of many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

The family would like to give special thanks to Cypress Place Assisted Living and Mr. James”Jim” Peterson for their compassion, care, and love shown.
