Jefferson’s golf team competed in the District 15-3A Tournament on Monday at Wood Hollow Golf Club in Longview. Overcoming sloppy course conditions, JHS’s boys team, comprised of junior Landon Fuquay, senior Ashton Youngblood, sophomore Dustin Childress and freshman Cade Walker, qualified for the Regional Tournament.

Senior Elaina Langbartels, Jefferson’s sole female golfer, also qualified for Regionals as an individual medalist. The top two teams from each district advance to the next level, the Regional II Tournament.

The two lowest individual scores who are not members of an advancing team qualify as medalists for the tournament. New Diana’s boys team took first place in district, and the Jefferson Bulldogs brought home the second place plaque, so both teams will advance to the Regional Tournament.

Tatum came in third in district. New Diana also swept the individual medals at the tournament, while Jefferson’s Fuquay finished just outside of medal placement, taking fourth place overall with a score of 89. This will be Fuquay’s second year at Regionals, having qualified as an individual last year.

On the girls’ side, the Hughes Springs team took home first place in district, New Diana placed second, and Tatum finished third. Jefferson’s Langbartels and Tatum’s Madison Peerenboom qualified as individual medalists for Regionals.

This will be Langbartels’s fourth year at the Regional Tournament; she qualified as a member of the ladies’ team in 2016 and 2017 and as a medalist last year. “I’m proud of the way the kids came out and performed when it mattered most,” JHS golf coach Josh Keith told the Jimplecute.

“Everyone that competed advanced to the regional tournament. The boys turned in the best team score in the last two seasons. Landon Fuquay makes the regional tournament for the second year in a row. Elaina Langbartels makes it 4 for 4 as she qualifies all four years of her career. It was a good day for Bulldog golf.”

The Region II Tournament will be held at Oak Hurst Golf Course in Bullard, with the boys playing April 22 and 23 and the ladies competing April 24 and 25.
