In a series of staff moves that looked at times like a game of Chinese checkers, the Jefferson ISD board approved an administration recommendation to add a “math interventionist” at the junior high level, Tuesday.
Superintendent Rob Barnwell noted how the reading interventionist on that campus was “getting good results.” He expects the math interventionist to gain similar results. “In a typical classroom,” Barnwell explained, “a teacher must deal with students performing at the top level and students who are at the bottom. The interventionist can come in and help those who are on the bottom.”
Trustee Leah Cooper quickly saw the value of the proposal. “Everybody will benefit,” Cooper said. “Those at the top will receive more attention from the teacher and those at the bottom will get help from the interventionist.” JISD Special Education Director Clint Coyne detailed the planned changes.
“Along with the fact we have a couple of different positions open due to the departure of employees, it has created a unique opportunity for us to fill these positions in a way that may allow us to add an academic position without the full financial impact to the district,” Coyne told the board.
Barnwell reminded the board that on a visit to study testing success at Pittsburg ISD, they observed the number of interventionists that district used. The board also approved the joint election agreement with the City of Jefferson for the May 4 election.
In addition to the early voting box, JISD will have Election Day polls at Jefferson Fire Station, Smithland School site, Mims Community Center and Lone Oak Baptist Church. The district’s depository agreement with Verabank was extended for two years.
A budget calendar to guide preparation of the 2019-2020 budget was adopted with final approval set for August 31. Following executive session, the board accepted the resignations of Terry Johnson and Barbara Friday.
