Jefferson’s Lady Dawgs softball team lost an away game to Elysian Fields on Friday, but came back strong to defeat Tatum in Jefferson on Tuesday.
Hannah Welch pitched six innings and allowed only five hits by the Lady Yellowjackets on Friday night. Elysian Fields, however, pitched a no-hitter and handed Jefferson a 3-0 loss.
“We hit the ball well tonight. We had some timely hits with people on base,” Coach Robert Bristow said of Tuesday’s match with Tatum.,
Tatum got on the board first with a run in the first inning, but Jefferson’s batters came alive with 4 runs in the second. Both teams were scoreless in the third, and the Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Eagles 5-1 in the fourth.
Jefferson scored 2 more runs in the fifth and held Tatum scoreless in the last three innings to seal the 11-2 victory. Coach Bristow was pleased with his team’s play, noting, “They played really good defense.”
Welch was on the mound for seven innings against Tatum and struck out 15 Lady Eagles. The senior also had a good night at the plate, hitting 3 of 4 with two doubles. Maddie Bristow also had two doubles and went 2 of 3 at the plate. Jaden Carter connected with the ball three times on 4 at-bats.
“Overall, I was proud of how the kids played, and I look forward to Friday night versus Ore City,” Bristow summarized. The Lady Dawgs will take on the Lady Rebels at 5 p.m. in Ore City.
