The Jefferson High School baseball team picked up a 15-8 win over Arp this week preparing for district competition against Elysian Fields, Tuesday. In a schedule flip, Tuesday’s game will be played here with JV at 4 p.m. and Varsity at 6:30 p.m.
“They are getting better,” Coach Don Cupples said of the JHS team. “That’s good to do before starting district.”Cupples said the team needed to show improvement on consistency and finding ways to finish games. “They need a killer instinct,” Cupples said. “They tend to let the opponent hang around.”
The Dawgs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning Monday night. They added five runs in the third, another in the fifth and iced the game with six runs in the seventh. Arp picked up one run in the third and struck for five runs in the sixth.
Jefferson ace Trace Smith had seven strikeouts in three innings of work, allowing just one run. Nathan Reeves finished the game for the pitching staff. Smith also four hits in five appearances at the plate with 3 RBIs. Blaze McMuller had three hits, Reeves also went three hits in four at-bats.
Both Dylan Polver and T.J. Foster notched two hits. Both of Foster’s smashes went for doubles. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play in the Minden, La. Tournament this weekend.
“Overall, I am very pleased with our effort,” Cupples said.
