Jefferson’s Lady Dawgs made the short trip to Hughes Springs and came home with a 57-30 win Friday evening. Freshman Tierrani Johnson apparently ate a bowl of Wheaties topped with spinach, as she scored a season-high 23 points. When asked her secret to having such a productive offensive performance, Johnson replied, “My secret was to just drive the ball if I had an opening in the defense and believe that I was going to make the shot.”
The Lady Dawgs allowed the Lady Mustangs to hang around a bit early in the game, ending with only a 1-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Hannah Welch hit a bucket, Johnson put up 2 baskets, Maddie Bristow nailed a three-pointer, and Mikiah Allen sunk a free throw in the first frame for a 10-9 Jefferson lead.
Welch and Elaina Langbartels scored field goals early in the second quarter to stretch the Lady Dawg advantage. With an assist from Mikiah Allen, Johnson scored a layup and then a free throw. Mackenzie Jordan hit a free throw, and after a couple of Hughes Springs buckets, Langbartels went 2 of 2 at the line for a 22-13 Jefferson lead. Katie Holliday made a steal, and Johnson turned it into 2 more points. The Lady Mustangs hit a free throw and a last-minute field goal, but Jefferson still had a 24-16 lead at the half.
Welch kicked off the third quarter with a shot from in the paint, and then Hughes Springs tried to narrow the score with a bucket; Johnson, however, came back with 2 baskets in a row, the second off of a Jordan steal. The Lady Mustangs only scored 3 more points in the third quarter, but the Lady Dawgs continued to dominate on offense, solidifying their lead. Welch and Johnson each sunk another field goal, and Holliday knocked down two three-pointers in a row for a 40-21 Lady Dawg lead going into the fourth quarter.
Johnson grabbed another steal early in the final quarter and turned it into 2 points. MaKiya Young then scored 2 field goals, and the Lady Dawgs were ahead 46-21. Hughes Springs made a bucket with about 4:20 left in the game, but Jefferson answered with 3 points from a Jordan free throw and an Allen layup. Bristow scored on a short jumper, and Johnson added another steal and 3 more layups to give Jefferson the 57-30 victory.
Johnson had an outstanding night with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist. Welch put up 8 points and had a block and 5 rebounds. Holliday knocked down 6 points and had 3 rebounds, an assist, and a steal, while Young had 6 points, 2 steals and a rebound. Bristow had 5 points, a steal, a block and two rebounds, and Langbartels put up 4 points and had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, a block and a steal. Allen had 3 points and 2 rebounds, and she led the team in assists with 6. Jordan sunk 2 points and was a defensive standout with 7 steals and 5 rebounds.
