The Jefferson Lady Dawgs took care of business at home with a definitive defensive showing Tuesday night. “They came into our house, and we don’t allow trespassers. We showed them what our Dawgs are all about,” said senior Mikiah Allen, regarding the 58-18 victory over the Ore City Lady Rebels. Allen led the team in assists with 4.
The Lady Dawg defense was stingiest in the first quarter, as the lone Ore City points came on a pair of free throws early in the quarter. Elaina Langbartels knocked down a three-pointer, and then Nia Garrett drove down the court for a layup following a Tierrani Johnson steal. Allen made a layup in traffic, and Jefferson led 7-2. Langbartels nailed a couple free throws, and then Hannah Welch scored with an assist from Nia Garrett, giving the Lady Dawgs an 11-2 lead at the end of the first.
Mackenzie Jordan was hot in the second quarter, scoring 12 of her 15 points in this frame. She hit her first bucket after an offensive rebound and followed with another basket. She was fouled on the second one, made her free throw, and then popped a three. Langbartels also canned a three-point shot, and Jordan nailed 2 more foul shots for a 24-2 Lady Dawg lead. Ore City put up 2 free throws, but Jordan quickly stole the ball and drove down the court for an easy layup. Ore City hit two field goals, their first in the game, very late in the second quarter. Allen made a statement with a jumper at the buzzer, and Jefferson took a 28-8 lead into the locker room.
Welch showed some offensive spunk after halftime, scoring a free throw and two buckets early in the third quarter. Garrett followed up with a basket and a free throw, and then made a layup after a steal by Jordan. Ore City scored their first points of the half following a short jumper by Welch, putting Jefferson up 40-8. Unstoppable under the basket, Welch scored again, and then Katie Holliday and Maddie Bristow each drained a 3. Ore City ended the third quarter with a trey, but Jefferson led by 34 going into the final frame.
Johnson, Langbartels, and Garrett each put up a free throw early in the fourth quarter, and then Jordan hit a three. Johnson went to the line again and made both shots with less than a minute left in the game, and then MaKiya Young and Garrett each sunk a free throw. Jefferson’s defense held the Lady Rebs to a mere 4 points in the last quarter, and the Lady Dawgs won the game in resounding fashion, 58-18.
Mackenzie Jordan led the way for Jefferson with 15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Hannah Welch had 11 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal. Elaina Langbartels put up 9 points and had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block, while Nia Garrett scored 9 and had a rebound, 3 steals, and 3 assists.
