The Jefferson Lady Bulldogs lost a nail-biter to the Elysian Fields Lady Yellowjackets Tuesday evening. Jefferson’s ladies led during much of the game but were overtaken in the fourth quarter.
Jefferson started off with a bang, thanks to two early steals by Nia Garrett. Mackenzie Jordan and Tierrani Johnson turned those steals into points, and the Lady Dawgs found themselves ahead 4-0. Elysian Fields put up a free throw, but Jordan and Hannah Welch each answered with a bucket for an 8-1 lead. Jordan drained a 3 after an EF field goal, and then the Lady Yellowjackets went on a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 11-12.
Maddie Bristow kicked off the second quarter with a 3-pointer to put Jefferson back ahead. Elysian Fields tied the game with a field goal, but Brianna Carter hit from under the basket to give the Lady Dawgs a 16-14 lead. The Lady Yellowjackets were finally called for their first team foul halfway through the second quarter, and B. Carter added a free throw for Jefferson. Following an EF score, Jaden Carter made a steal, and Johnson took it down the court for a layup. Jefferson took a narrow 19-17 lead into the locker room.
Johnson hit a basket early in the third quarter, and then Welch scored and followed up with 2 free throws. The Lady Yellowjackets scored twice to narrow Jefferson’s lead to 25-21, but Jefferson came back with a Garrett bucket and a Jordan foul shot. The Lady Dawgs led 28-25 going into the last quarter.
Elysian Fields started the quarter with a 6-point streak to take the lead, but Bristow jacked a 3 to tie the game at 31. The Lady Yellowjackets hit a bucket and then 2 free throws to go back ahead, but Garrett narrowed the gap to 33-35 with a jump shot. Elysian Fields was awarded another foul and made one of two, and then scored a field goal on their next possession. Welch put up a basket for a 35-38 score, but EF received two more foul calls and nailed 3 out of 4 free throws to seal the game.
The Lady Dawgs were led by Hannah Welch and Mackenzie Jordan, who had 8 points apiece. Tierrani Johnson and Maddie Bristow each put up 6 points, Nia Garrett had 4, and Brianna Carter scored 3.
With the 35-41 loss, Jefferson went to 18-6 on the season. They will face Tatum on Friday night in Tatum.
