After Jefferson High finished off Elysian Fields High 58-35 on Tuesday, thoughts of the upcoming match up with Tatum High School filled the minds of everyone in Bulldog Gymnasium.
Friday night the Dawgs will travel to Eagle Coliseum for a rematch with Tatum High. On December 21 Jefferson defeated Tatum 61-57. Tatum is 7-1 in district, while Jefferson is still perfect at 8-0.
On Tuesday, the Bulldogs were too much for the Elysian Field Yellow Jackets. Jefferson won the tip, and Chrishon Hicks drew a foul attempting to dunk. He hit 1-2 for a 1-0 Jefferson lead. It would stay that score for a couple of minutes, reminding folks of the upcoming baseball season.
Lyrik Rawls stole a Yellow Jacket pass and made a beautiful pass of his own to Chris Shepard. Shepard faked two defenders and made the lay-up to make it 3-0 Dawgs. Elysian Fields quickly called an early timeout to regroup.
Kylan Thomas made back-to-back shots to increase the lead to 7-0. Rawls assisted on one of those baskets with a nice no-look pass. After a free throw by Kevin Pinson, and a three-pointer by Shepard, Jefferson had an 11-0 lead.
Josh Thomas drove down the lane and made the shot, being fouled in the process. He made the free throw for a 14-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets finally made a basket with 1:45 left in the first quarter. Rawls then made two more shots, and the lead was 18-2 at the end of the first.
Elysian Fields scored the first four points of the second quarter, but after that it was all Bulldogs. Four three-pointers highlighted the scoring (two each by K. Thomas and J. Thomas). J. Thomas hit the last three with two seconds on the game clock. The Dawgs had a 35-9 lead at the half.
Jefferson found themselves outscored 12-9 in a sloppy third quarter. Jefferson only made four shots, but still led 44-21 going to the fourth.
The Dawgs went on a 12-3 run to begin the final period. Jefferson had a 56-24 lead with five minutes to go and coasted to their seventh straight win.
Shepard led the way with 16 points, and K. Thomas added 13. J. Thomas and Hicks both scored 9 points, and Pinson had 7 points. Rawls and Jakardan Davidson each scored 2.
Rawls also had six assists and five steals. Hicks finished with three blocks and affected several other Yellow Jacket attempts. Jefferson has a perfect record at home this season and is 17-6 overall.
The boys need the Bulldog fans to fill the Tatum Coliseum on Friday night. Be loud and proud as the Dawgs try to sweep the Eagles and stay undefeated in district.
