The Lady Dawgs handled the New Diana Lady Eagles in Bulldog Gymnasium on Friday night. Jefferson improved their record to 18-5 (6-3 in district) with the 54-31 win.
“I think this was a great win for us. We’re really working together as a team, and we just need to continue that for the rest of the season,” said Senior Captain Elaina Langbartels.
The Lady Dawgs got on the scoreboard almost immediately with a 3-pointer from Langbartels, and Tierrani Johnson followed up with a quick score to give Jefferson an early 5-0 lead. Hannah Welch put up a basket in between two New Diana 3-pointers and then hit again from under the bucket.
Turnovers played a huge part in the first quarter, as the Lady Dawgs scored four times off of steals. Nia Garrett made a steal and passed to Johnson, who drove down the court and layed up a shot. Welch also had a steal, which Mackenzie Jordan turned into 2 points. Garrett stole another ball, and Johnson added another bucket for a 15-6 Lady Dawg lead. Langbartels wrapped up the 11-0 run by Jefferson with another 3. At the end of the first quarter, Mikiah Allen added yet another steal to the Lady Dawg stat sheet and pounded down the court for a layup to give Jefferson a 20-10 advantage.
New Diana only scored 4 points in the second quarter, while the Lady Dawgs put up 13. Langbartels kicked off the quarter by draining another three, and then Welch scored twice down low. Jordan nailed a couple free throws, and Nia Garrett made 2 layups, the second one on a fast break following another steal. Jefferson took a commanding 33-14 lead into halftime.
The Lady Eagles started out the third quarter with a 7-0 run to chip away at Jefferson’s lead. Jordan scored with 1:04 left in the frame on a jumper plus a foul shot for a three-point play. Brianna Carter scored from under the basket, and the Lady Dawgs took a 38-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
Maddie Bristow hit a free throw in the last quarter, and then the Lady Eagles put up a couple baskets. Jefferson went on an 8-0 run with Welch, Jordan, and Allen scoring field goals and Allen hitting 2/2 free throws. With a score of 47-26, New Diana hit a 2 and a 3 to narrow Jefferson’s lead to 47-31, but Katie Holliday sunk a 3-pointer with less than 2 minutes left in the game. About a minute later, Bristow tossed in a basket to expand the Lady Dawg lead to 52-31. Holliday rounded out the night with a 2-point jumper at the final buzzer to give Jefferson an impressive 54-31 victory.
Hannah Welch was the high-point leader for Jefferson with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and a steal. Elaina Langbartels put up 9 points and had 8 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Mackenzie Jordan scored 9 points and had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block. Tierrani Johnson and Mikiah Allen each had 6 points and 2 assists; Johnson pulled down 6 rebounds and had a steal, while Allen took 3 steals. Nia Garrett had 4 points and led the team in assists and steals, with 5 of each. Katie Holliday (5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), Maddie Bristow (2 points, 1 steal, 1 rebound), and Brianna Carter (2 points, 3 rebounds) rounded out the stats for the Lady Dawgs.
The ladies will match up against Elysian Fields on Tuesday for another home district game.
