Jefferson’s Lady Dawgs traveled to Daingerfield for a district matchup on Friday night. The Lady Tigers took advantage of 25 turnovers to take the 38-53 win over Jefferson.
The Lady Dawgs struck first in the game with an early layup by Tierrani Johnson. Daingerfield quickly answered and tied the game. Mackenzie Jordan and Elaina Langbartels bookended a Tiger bucket with a free throw each to tie the score, 4-4. Daingerfield went on a 7-0 run before Hannah Welch knocked down 2 baskets from down low. The Lady Tigers ended the quarter with a steal and a layup, and Jefferson saw an 8-13 deficit at the end of the first.
Jordan broke another Daingerfield 7-0 run with a field goal in the second quarter. The Lady Tigers then scored another bucket, and The Lady Dawgs were down 10-22. Nia Garrett made a free throw, and Daingerfield answered with 2 of their own. Johnson narrowed the gap again with a steal and a layup, and then the Lady Tigers were called for a technical foul; Langbartels shot and made both penalty shots and cut Daingerfield’s lead to 9 points. Garrett tossed in a bucket, and then Welch added a 2-pointer and two free throws near the end of the second quarter. Lady Dawgs were behind 21-27 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers put up 6 points in a row before Johnson broke their streak with a free throw. The Lady Dawgs did not score again until there was less than a minute left in the third. Jordan nailed a bucket and then Garrett sunk a jump shot at the buzzer, and Jefferson ended the quarter trailing 26-39.
Three Lady Dawgs put up points in the fourth quarter, but Daingerfield also continued to score. Welch, Jordan, and Johnson hit two baskets apiece in the final frame, but the Lady Dawgs took a hard-fought 38- 53 loss on the road.
Hannah Welch had an excellent night and led the team with a double-double (12 points and 13 rebounds). Nia Garrett and Tierrani Johnson were just outside double digits with 9 points apiece, and they each had a steal. Mackenzie Jordan put up five points and had 10 rebounds, while Elaina Langbartels had 3 points, pulled down 9 rebounds, and had a steal.
The Lady Dawgs’ record went to 4-3 at the end of the first round of district matchups, and they will have a rematch versus the Lady Wildcats in Waskom on Tuesday night. Jefferson’s ladies are 16-5 overall on the season.
