Jefferson’s Lady Dawgs hit the court again Friday night after a two-week break from games. The ladies continued practices during the holidays, which no doubt aided in their 57-43 victory over the Ore City Lady Rebels.

“It feels good to get back on the court after all of the hard work we put in over the break,” Senior Captain Hannah Welch said.  Welch was a defensive standout in the game with 9 rebounds, 8 of those on defense.

The Lady Dawgs took an early 4-2 lead following baskets by Welch and Nia Garrett. Mackenzie Jordan hit a 2-pointer and Elaina Langbartels drained a 3 to give Jefferson a 9-2 advantage. The Lady Rebels answered with a four-point run before Tierrani Johnson made a steal and turned it into 2 points on a fast break.  Ore City came back with two 3-pointers in a row to take their first lead of the game. Katie Holliday then nailed a 3 to put Jefferson back on top 14-12, but the Lady Rebels put up 2 free throws to tie the game near the end of the first quarter. Langbartels popped a 3-point buzzer-beater to give Jefferson a 17-14 lead to end the quarter.

Holliday started the second quarter with a score, and then Langbartels hit a fadeaway jumper. Brianna Carter nailed a shot from under the basket to give the Lady Dawgs a 23-18 lead.  Mackenzie Jordan put up a free throw and Langbartels put up 2 from the line. Johnson stole again and passed to Garrett, who was fouled as she made the layup. Garrett sunk her free throw, giving the junior a 3-point play. Langbartels dropped in 2 more free throws near the end of the quarter to give Jefferson a 33-26 halftime lead.

The Lady Rebels came back strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Dawgs 10-4. Langbartels was the only Jefferson baller to put up points in the quarter, and the Lady Dawgs led by a single point, 37-36, going into the final stanza.

Ore City started the fourth quarter with the go-ahead 3-pointer, but the Lady Dawgs came roaring back with 20 points in the quarter, including early scores by Jordan, Garrett, and Johnson. Langbartels nailed her third trey of the game, and Johnson dropped in another layup. Free throws gave Jefferson a huge advantage in the quarter, with Garrett going 3 of 4, Jordan hitting 4 of 4, and Johnson nailing 2 of 2. The Lady Dawg defense held the Lady Rebels to 7 points in the fourth and took the 57-43 win.

Jefferson had 2 players with double-doubles for the night. Elaina Langbartels notched her 7th of the season with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists. Nia Garrett’s double-double included 10 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Mackenzie Jordan (11 points), Tierrani Johnson (8), Katie Holliday (5), Hannah Welch (2) and Brianna Carter (2) rounded out the scoring for the Lady Dawgs.
