The Lady Dawgs took on top-ranked Tatum at Bulldog Gym on Friday night. Jefferson’s ladies put in a strong fourth quarter, but they were defeated 53-60.
Points were hard to come by for the Lady Dawgs in the first quarter. Elaina Langbartels hit a 2, and Maddie Bristow nailed a 3 for the only Jefferson points in the first frame. Tierrani Johnson made three layups in the second quarter, and Langbartels and Hannah Welch each added a bucket for a 15-25 Lady Dawg deficit at halftime.
The Lady Dawgs heated things up in the second half, starting with a 7-0 run. Langbartels and Welch each hit a field goal, and then Langbartels drained a 3-pointer to tighten the game to within 3 points. Johnson and Welch each added another bucket, and Bristow sunk her second trey of the game, but Jefferson was behind 29-40 going into the fourth quarter. Tatum scored first in the last frame, stretching their lead to 29-43, but Mackenzie Jordan quickly added a deuce for Jefferson.
In a strong defensive showing, Langbartels blocked a shot under the basket, and Welch made a steal for the Lady Dawgs. Langbartels hit another 3, and then Johnson stole the ball, and Nia Garrett turned it into 2 points for Jefferson. Langbartels scored on a 2-point jumper, and then hit her third 3-pointer of the game, cutting Tatum’s lead to 8 points. Jordan drove for 2 layups in a row, and Welch tossed in a free throw to tighten the game to 46-49. Tatum scored again, but Welch nailed a jumper under the basket for a 48-51 score with 1:52 left in the game. Jordan added her fourth layup of the game to make it a one-point game. Tatum hit a field goal and two free throws to widen their lead to 50-55. Jefferson’s Garrett answered with a layup and drew a foul; she made her free throw and narrowed the score to 53-55 with only 27 seconds left in the game. Tatum nailed a couple shots in the final seconds for a 53-60 final score.
Elaina Langbartels led the team in scoring with 17 points; she also added 3 rebounds and 3 blocks. Hannah Welch had 9 points and 4 rebounds, and she led the team in steals with 5. Mackenzie Jordan and Tierrani Johnson each scored 8 points, and Jordan was Jefferson’s leading rebounder with 6. Maddie Bristow had 6 points and Nia Garrett ended the night with 5 points, 8 assists, and 2 steals.
