You have to already know there is more than one spider man movie, but did you know there is more than one Spider “person”? Intrigued? A newer, clever storyline awaits the family. Its multi-dimensional context easily holds the interest of young and old alike.
Be prepared early on for an unexpected character loss, but don’t worry, allies are in the background picking up slack in the sticky web. It’s a wild ride for Spidey and Crew! The illustration is certainly the hippest of any superhero (animated or otherwise acted) I can remember seeing in a while. Visual appeal invites the rest of the senses to join the journey.
Characters are fresh and current, with a classically nostalgic and conversely urban, soundtrack to match. I wouldn’t mind listening to this diverse mix in my car, though. Certainly not your father’s Spiderman here, but the expected: spectacular action, vibrant energy, and splashes of relatable humor round out the film.
It really is as good as the consensus of reviews out there are saying! I smiled all the way through, as did my theater counterparts. The reason I know? Because the only negative thing to say: at certain times the graphics weren’t crisp. I thought I was maybe missing picking up some disposable glasses, and had to check nearby faces for confirmation I was not.
No, I wasn’t in the wrong showing, some of the graphics were just dizzying. Nonetheless, thrills and mid-air swing after swing, connect all the definitive dots in confronting a couple villains for another epic, final battle. Spectacularly, Sony Pictures Animation really makes a redeeming comeback here, from their 2017 stinker “The Emoji Movie.”
All ages are sure to agree! You may hear some f a m i l i a r c h a r a c t e r voices in that of Shameik Moore, Lily Tomlin, Jake Johnson , and Hailee Steinfeld, who all lend their talent. (Well not really “lend,” I’m sure they get paid well.) Hint: be sure to stay put until the final credit rolls, for a surprise morsel of the next movie.
Spider-Verse runs 100 minutes and is rated PG.
