The Jefferson Lady Dawgs improved to 7-2 on the season with a 58-56 win over Atlanta’s Lady Rabbits on Tuesday.
The teams kept it close in the first quarter, and Jefferson came out of the first with a 12-11 lead. Hannah Welch and Mackenzie Jordan turned up the heat in the second quarter, with Welch scoring 6 and Jordan scoring 5, helping the Lady Dawgs to a 28-22 lead at the half.
The third quarter was all Jefferson, as Welch and Mikiah Allen dumped in two buckets apiece and Elaina Langbartels drained a three-pointer. Maddie Bristow hit a long range three at the buzzer to give Jefferson some momentum as they entered the fourth quarter with a 42-30 advantage over the Lady Rabbs.
Atlanta took advantage of a few turnovers to tie the game at 51 late in the final quarter. Welch answered with 2 field goals to put the Lady Dawgs back on top 55-51. Atlanta scored another bucket and a free throw to close the gap to within a point, 55-54, with 1:15 left in the game. Langbartels dropped in another trey with less than a minute, but the Lady Rabbits answered with a field goal. Atlanta was headed back down the court, but Nia Garrett captured a steal with less than 5 seconds left in the game, and the Lady Dawgs finished with a 58-56 victory.
Welch dominated under the basket with 18 points for the night; she was a beast on the boards with 14 rebounds, and she also had 2 steals. Langbartels tossed in 3 three-pointers for 9 points and had 8 rebounds, a steal, and 2 blocks. Jordan had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and a block. Mikiah Allen and Garrett each had 6 points, and Garrett also grabbed 2 steals. Bristow (5 points), Jaden Carter (2 points), Tierrani Johnson (2 points), and MaKiya Young (1 point) rounded out the scoring for Jefferson.
