Lady Dawgs Performing Well at Spring Hill Tournament

IMG_8822Jefferson’s Lady Dawgs are playing in the Jo Ann Sparks Memorial Basketball Tournament in Spring Hill this weekend. They dropped a close game to 5A Pine Tree and defeated 4A Spring Hill.

The Lady Dawgs took on the Pine Tree Lady Pirates on Thursday and found themselves down 12-23 at halftime. The Jefferson ladies came back strong in the second half thanks to field goals by Hannah Welch, Nia Garrett, Mackenzie Jordan, and Tierrani Johnson. Elaina Langbartels hit a three-pointer in both the third and fourth quarters, and Katie Holliday added a trey in the fourth. The Lady Dawgs were down 35-40 with 53 seconds left on the clock when Welch stole the ball and passed to Jordan, who added 2 more points to the Jefferson tally (37-40). Pine Tree scored another field goal and then fouled Garrett, who sunk a free throw (38-42). Ma’Kiya Young rebounded the next one and put it in the hole to narrow the gap to 40-42 with only 7 seconds left in the game. Pine Tree inbounded the ball and then drew a foul. The Lady Pirate made 1 free throw, and the game ended with a loss for the Lady Dawgs, 40-43.

Lady Dawg stats for the Pine Tree game: Holliday and Jordan each had 7 points. Welch, Langbartels, Garrett, and Johnson had 6 points apiece, and Young put up 2.

On Friday, Jefferson played host Spring Hill. Holliday and Langbartels each dropped in a 3, Jordan had a bucket, and Garrett added a free throw in the first quarter, and the Lady Dawgs led 9-6. Spring Hill’s defense was tough in the second quarter; Langbartels hit a field goal, but Jefferson found themselves behind 11-15 near the end of the half. Jaden Carter sunk a halftime buzzer beater and drew a foul. Carter made her free throw, and the Lady Dawgs took a small deficit (14-15) into halftime. In the third quarter, Holliday and Jordan each scored a bucket, and Langbartels hit one and was 2/2 at the free throw line. Garrett had 1 field goal, but she added 2 more points when she went in for a layup at the end of the third quarter to tie the game at 26-26. Spring Hill scored quickly in the fourth quarter, but Jordan answered right back with a 2-pointer of her own. She then hit a 3 to give Jefferson the lead 31-28 with 3:39 left in the game. The Lady Panthers scored 3 more to tie the game at 31, but Langbartels sunk a field goal to put the Lady Dawgs back ahead (33-31). Spring Hill came back to tie once again, but Jordan came through with the go-ahead bucket to win the game, 35-33.

Lady Dawg stats for the Spring Hill game: Langbartels and Jordan each with 11 points. Garrett and Holliday each added 5, and Jaden Carter had 3.

Jefferson will take on Carthage Saturday at 11:00 A.M.
