It looks like we are going to have a cold Thanksgiving in Marion County this year, and electric and gas bills are unfortunately going to be higher because of it. If money is tight at your house, maybe some of these benefits would help your family this holiday.
McGarity’s Saloon at 208 West Dallas Street in Jefferson is offering a free turkey to all needy families. No questions will be asked and no forms to fill out about income or background. When asked about the offer, an employee said, “Our owners want to be a blessing to the less fortunate in our community.”
You can visit McGarity’s Facebook page and send them a message, or you can call them at the restaurant. They anticipate giving away over fifty turkeys. As of this writing they still have some turkeys available, but they will be gobbled up quickly (sorry, I couldn’t resist). McGarity’s will communicate with you on how to pick up your free turkey closer to Thanksgiving time.
Blessings of Grace Food Pantry and Compassion are open regular hours. In interviews with employees I was told that they probably will have extra food available. “Blessings of Grace and Compassion are serve a lot of people every week,” Shirley Partridge said. “They also do 102 backpacks for the schools each week.” The free produce on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 A.M. attracts several families. Blessings of Grace and Compassion are both located at 510 East Bonham Street. Contact these generous organizations at (903) 742-9710 for a complete schedule. Compassion needs donations, so if you are looking for a way to help, you can give to this worthy cause.
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Dry Dock at Lake of the Pines also operate food banks. If you would like a good home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner coupled with some worship, check out the following churches.
This Sunday, Heritage Baptist Church in Jefferson and North Shore Baptist Church in Avinger are both offering free Thanksgiving dinners to all who attend their 11 A.M. worship services. Feed your soul then sit down to a wonderful turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
