The Jefferson Lady Dawgs basketball team began pool play at the Carl Oliver Tournament in New Diana on Thursday with a 55-38 win over the 4A Spring Hill Lady Panthers.
Jefferson took an early lead in the first quarter, but Spring Hill was strong at the foul line, and jumped ahead midway through the quarter. Jefferson’s ladies relied on excellent rebounding to help regain the lead, 16-15, by the end of the first.
In the second quarter, the Lady Panthers once again took the lead, but the Lady Dawg defense snagged 6 steals, and Jefferson was 3 out of 3 at the line to take a 31-24 advantage into halftime.
The Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Panthers 12-6 in the third quarter and 12-8 in the fourth quarter to win the game 55-38.
Elaina Langbartels had a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, and a blocked shot; she went 3/3 at the free throw line. Tierrani Johnson was the leading scorer with 15 points; she also had 2 rebounds and 4 steals. Brianna Carter shot 100% from the floor and 67% from the free throw line for a total of 8 points; she added 2 rebounds and 1 block. Hannah Welch scored 6 points and had 4 rebounds.
Mackenzie Jordan had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Mikiah Allen led the team in assists with 6. Nia Garrett had 4 points, two steals, and a rebound, and Katie Holliday finished with 3 points.
