Jefferson’s Lady Dawgs opened the 2018-2019 basketball season at home with a resounding 65-31 victory over the Queen City Lady Dawgs on Tuesday evening. A quick and strong defense, including 31 steals, gave Jefferson a huge advantage in the game.
Jefferson dominated in the first quarter of play, allowing Queen City only 5 points. Hannah Welch and Nia Garrett each had a field goal, Brianna Carter had a field goal and two free throws, and Tierrani Johnson racked up 3 field goals. Ma’Kiya Young and Katie Holliday each added a free throw to give Jefferson a 16-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Welch led the way in the second quarter with 6 points. Johnson and Garrett each had 5 points, and Elaina Langbartels added 2 points and 5 rebounds in the quarter. Jefferson took a 36-13 advantage into halftime.
Langbartels turned up the heat in the third quarter with 7 points (2 FG and a 3-pointer), and Welch and Johnson each sunk a field goal. Ti’Jana Hall dropped in 4 points, Mikiah Allen made 2 free throws, and Nia Garrett added a free throw. Jefferson’s lead at the end of the third was 54-21.
The Jefferson Lady Dawgs continued their excellent offensive and defensive efforts in the fourth quarter, with Johnson, Welch, Langbartels, and newcomer Maddie Bristow adding field goals. Young had a field goal and a free throw, and Brianna Carter reached for 3 rebounds.
Overall for the night, Jefferson had three different players with double-digit points. Freshman Tierrani Johnson led the way with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 steals. Senior Hannah Welch also had 7 steals and was a force under the basket with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Senior Elaina Langbartels put up a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 4 assists. Junior Nia Garrett was a key player on offense and defense with 8 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Sophomore Brianna Carter had 6 points, a steal, and 6 rebounds. Senior Ti’Jana Hall added 4 points, 4 rebounds, and had a steal, while junior Jaden Carter finished the night with 2 rebounds. Junior Ma’Kiya Young had 4 points and a steal and was strong down low with a block and 6 rebounds. Senior Mikiah Allen ended up with 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals, and junior Maddie Bristow had 2 points. Sophomore Katie Holliday hustled for 2 steals, 2 rebounds, and a point, while junior Mackenzie Jordan stole the ball twice and had 2 rebounds.
The Jefferson Lady Dawgs will compete in the New Diana Tournament November 15-17.
