Jefferson’s volleyball team hosted Hughes Springs on Tuesday to wrap up the 2018 season. The Lady Mustangs won the match in three sets over the Lady Dawgs: 24-26, 22-25, 20-25.

Jefferson started strong in the first set, pulling out to a 4-0 lead. Hughes Springs then pulled ahead 4-5, but Nia Garrett made a kill for a Lady Dawg point to tie the game. The Lady Mustangs took over again with 4 points in a row, but Jakaila Ventimiglia added a kill and Elaina Langbartels aced a serve to narrow the gap. Garrett took over serving with the score at 8-11 and put Jefferson in the lead, with the help of Celeberity Jeter-Coleman’s smashing kill and a block from Mackenzie Jordan. The Lady Dawgs maintained their lead until the end of the set, when Hughes Springs made a comeback to take the set 24-26.

The Lady Dawgs had a much slower start in the second set, and found themselves down 2-11. Ar’Tazia Warren aced a serve and Jaden Carter and Ventimiglia made kills to get Jefferson back in the game. Langbartels added 3 service points to the effort. Carter then aced two serves to tie the set at 16. Despite blocks by Langbartels and Carter and a kill by Garrett, the Lady Mustangs won the second set 22-25.

The Lady Dawgs started the third set with a bang. Jordan served up two aces, and Langbartels hit two unstoppable spikes, and Jefferson took an early 5-1 lead. Garrett and Langbartels each added another kill, and Jefferson was up 7-1. The Lady Mustangs began chipping away at the Jefferson lead, and with the score 11-10, Langbartels added her fourth kill of the set to increase the Lady Dawg lead 12-10.  Hughes Springs finally tied the game, but a kill by Tierrani Johnson and a block by Langbartels put Jefferson back in the lead. However, the Lady Mustangs persevered to come back and win the third, 20-25.
