Lady Dawgs Drop Final Volleyball Game to Hughes Springs

Jefferson’s volleyball team hosted Hughes Springs on Tuesday to wrap up the 2018 season. The Lady Mustangs won the match in three sets over the Lady Dawgs: 24-26, 22-25, 20-25.

Jefferson started strong in the first set, pulling out to a 4-0 lead. Hughes Springs then pulled ahead 4-5, but Nia Garrett made a kill for a Lady Dawg point to tie the game. The Lady Mustangs took over again with 4 points in a row, but Jakaila Ventimiglia added a kill and Elaina Langbartels aced a serve to narrow the gap. Garrett took over serving with the score at 8-11 and put Jefferson in the lead, with the help of Celeberity Jeter-Coleman’s smashing kill and a block from Mackenzie Jordan. The Lady Dawgs maintained their lead until the end of the set, when Hughes Springs made a comeback to take the set 24-26.

The Lady Dawgs had a much slower start in the second set, and found themselves down 2-11. Ar’Tazia Warren aced a serve and Jaden Carter and Ventimiglia made kills to get Jefferson back in the game. Langbartels added 3 service points to the effort. Carter then aced two serves to tie the set at 16. Despite blocks by Langbartels and Carter and a kill by Garrett, the Lady Mustangs won the second set 22-25.

The Lady Dawgs started the third set with a bang. Jordan served up two aces, and Langbartels hit two unstoppable spikes, and Jefferson took an early 5-1 lead. Garrett and Langbartels each added another kill, and Jefferson was up 7-1. The Lady Mustangs began chipping away at the Jefferson lead, and with the score 11-10, Langbartels added her fourth kill of the set to increase the Lady Dawg lead 12-10.  Hughes Springs finally tied the game, but a kill by Tierrani Johnson and a block by Langbartels put Jefferson back in the lead. However, the Lady Mustangs persevered to come back and win the third, 20-25.

Notable statistics for the Lady Dawgs:

Mackenzie Jordan – 6 assists, 2 aces, 5 digs

Nia Garrett – 6 assists, 4 kills

Elaina Langbartels – 5 kills, 2 blocks

Ar’Tazia Warren – 6 digs

Hannah Welch – 6 digs

This was the final game for these volleyball Lady Dawgs, but the basketball Lady Dawgs are reported to have started practicing b-ball today. Their first scrimmage will be Saturday, November 3 in the Bulldog gym at 10:00 A.M.
