The Jefferson Lady Dawgs opened District 15-3A play with a three-set loss to the New Diana Lady Eagles in Bulldog gym on Friday afternoon.
With a record of 17-8, the Lady Eagles are arguably the best team in the district, but the Lady Dawgs held their own in the first set. The score was tight, and there were several lead changes, but New Diana rallied at the end of the set to come away with a 25-22 victory to start off the match.
The Lady Dawgs had the lead at the beginning of set 2, but the Lady Eagles caught up and began to pull away about halfway through the set, ending with a 25-12 win. New Diana took a sizeable lead early in the 3rd, and though Jefferson tried to mount a comeback, they could not overcome the Lady Eagles’ formidable hitting.
Jefferson’s Mackenzie Jordan tried to even things out at the service line with 7 service points. Senior Elaina Langbartels was strong at the net with 3 blocks for the evening, while Jakaila Ventimiglia added 4 kills for the Lady Dawgs.
Jefferson is 9-16 on the season and 0-1 in the district. They will travel to Daingerfield for a District 15-3A matchup against the Lady Tigers on Tuesday, September 11. The junior varsity match will begin at 4:30 P.M., followed by the varsity game.
