From Staff Reports

The Friday Night Lights were bright indeed for the Jefferson Bulldogs in their home opener against 4A foe, Center. The Bulldogs (2-0) racked up 528 yards of total offense in a 33-14 drubbing of the Roughriders (1-1).

Jefferson’s offense wasted no time getting on the board. With 8:54 left in the 1st quarter, Kylan Thomas scampered 32 yards on a quarterback keeper for the first touchdown of the night. Landon Fuquay’s PAT was good, making the score 7-0. Thomas found the end zone again on a 5-yard run with 3:36 left in the quarter.  Fuquay’s PAT increased the Dawgs’ lead to 14-0.

Center found some offensive fortitude in the 2nd quarter, as Jaydon Hicks scored from 1 yard out late in the half.  Alexis Lopez added a PAT to cut Jefferson’s halftime lead to 14-7.

Coach Antwain Jimmerson had his Bulldogs fired up after halftime. The defense was formidable and kept Center scoreless in the 3rd quarter.  On a punt return at 9:36, senior TQ Jackson blazed down the field for a 60-yard touchdown. With no PAT, the Dawgs took a 20-7 lead into the final quarter.

Kylan Thomas scored again early in the 4th on a 20-yard run. Fuquay’s PAT made the score 27-7. Center scored on a 10-yard pass play, but the Bulldogs answered quickly with a 34-yard touchdown run from Dee Black.

Coach Jimmerson was especially satisfied with the improvement in his defense from week 1. Defensive standouts were Dillon Griffin with 8 tackles (3 for loss), 1 sack, and 3 quarterback hurries and Malik Cannon with 14 tackles (1 TFL).

On quarterback Kylan Thomas, Coach Jimmerson said, “Last week we had the injury [quarterback Trey Hodge], and Kylan came in, and he was ready to go. Tonight, he got his first start as quarterback. He did a good job of leading the offense and taking care of the ball.”  Thomas had a stellar performance with 201 rushing yards, 106 passing yards, and 3 touchdowns. Dee Black showed his usual speed with 155 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Senior Justin Davis suffered an ankle injury in the game. His family reports that he could be out for 3-4 weeks, pending the results of the MRI. Justin is staying positive that surgery will not be necessary.

The Bulldogs will host Arp (0-2) on Friday, September 14 at 7:30.
