From Staff Reports
Kylan Thomas and Malik Cannon landed one-two punches on Elysian Field-West Rusk in the Bulldogs last scrimmage before Jefferson High School open the season Aug. 30 in Pittsburg.
Thomas had two carries for 79 yards and a touchdown. Cannon also scored a touchdown on two carries for 68 yards.
With the Jefferson defense giving up only one score, the Bulldogs could claim a 2-1 win.
The score by Cannon was particularly sweet.
“After all he’s (Malik) gone through,” Head Coach Antwain Jimmerson said, “we’re all just thankful that he’s still here.”
Cannon was the victim of a shooting incident May 26 that sent him and a friend to the hospital.
The touchdown “was his first carry of the game,” Jimmerson said. “It was a very special moment for him.”
Jimmerson also noted improved play in the offensive line.
“We’re still playing seven guys on O line,” Jimmerson said. “Those guys are getting better.”
At quarterback Trey Hodge was 4 for 7 and 43 yards. Bryson Johnson was the leading receiver with 3 catches for 21 yards.
The head coach also noted how the defense responded well to adversity.
“Elysian Field went right down the field and scored on their first possession,” Jimmerson said. “The kids responded well,” the coach continued. “We started a little sluggish, then they settled in. The defense adjusted well.”
Kannon Glover paced the defense with 6 tackles and a sack. The defense allowed just 72 yards.
For the Bulldogs to be successful, the team has to play fast, Jimmerson explained. “We’re not very big.”
Jimmerson also noted many starters saw only limited playing time in the scrimmage so the coaches could look at other players.
Kickoff Thursday against the Pirates is set for 7 p.m.
