From Staff Reports

Jefferson High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Antwain Jimmerson says there are two goals in a pre-season scrimmage: get better and avoid injuries.

On the later, the Bulldogs are fortunate that Edward Waites left the hospital Saturday morning and is reported to have only suffered a sprain. Very good news, says Jimmerson.

The Bulldogs did get better by finding out where their players, skills and depth will be coming from this fall. They did some control plays to start last night and then played a controlled half game. Wide receiver TQ Jackson caught three passes, one of which he scored a touchdown.

Two backup quarterbacks, Kylan Thomas and Lyrik Rawls, are “very dynamic” with what they can do with their legs, says Jimmerson. “I think people are going to be surprised at the games. Our offense is going to look very, very different.” Jimmerson said there will be a lot of getting them out on the edge and giving them some run-pass options.

Jimp Sports WriterIn the controlled scrimmage, Jimmerson says he wanted his team to show they could stop someone. The first team defense “played tough” and did not give up a touchdown. During the last half game, the teams played thirty plays and only on the last play did Waskom find the endzone. Compared to last year’s 20 points given up against the Wildcats, the projected 14 points that would have been surrendered in a full game is a 30 percent improvement.

Jimmerson noted several returning seniors who “really stepped up” and highlighted how the offensive line coach, Stephen Barnes, makes the players compete for playing time. “Eight guys played with our first unit,” he says.

Jimmerson says the focus for this week will be on weight lifting and correcting mistakes from Friday night. He says even though you are playing somebody else, you want to correct your mistakes. “These coaches are pretty smart now. If you make a mistake, they will find it.”

The Bulldogs play again Thursday night in a scrimmage against Elysian Fields-West Rusk.
