DID YOU KNOW?
Getting to work – Founded in the 1930s, the Jefferson Allen Wise Garden Club began as a social gathering for ladies to exchange recipes, discuss gardening and visit. Little did the original members imagine national publications would hail them 40 years later as the group who saved Jefferson. In 1959 the Garden Club purchased Excelsior House Hotel which had fallen into a dilapidated state. The women, shown here with their brooms and mops, cleaned, restored and furnished the hotel with their own hands.
