Book Review | “Oops! The Manners Guide for Girls”

OOpsAnother book from the American Girl Library is “Oops! The Manners Guide for Girls” by Nancy Holyoke and Debbie Tilley.  The book is a guide for how young girls should act so that they communicate kindness and good intentions to others.

The authors describe manners as a sort of “code” we use to let those we meet and talk with know we want to be gracious and respectful to them.

The guide is broken into eight sections.  The first one is entitled “The Basics” and covers “Magic Words.”  Magic words, such as “Please” and “Thank you” are described as words we use to make asking for things from others a happier and easier experience.  Some examples are presented as illustrations for situations when “I’m sorry,” “Excuse us,” and “Can I help?” are helpful words to use.

Other sections in the book are “Hi! Let’s Talk” that cover greetings and chitchat and “Yum! Eating In, Eating Out” that help with “nibbling nicely” and “problem foods.”  “Yikes!” is a specially entertaining section that gives some tips for handling embarrassing or gross situations.
