We Band of Angels

We Band of AngelsOn Thursday, March 8, the Martha McCraw Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, had a review of a book of local interest, We Band of Angelsby Elizabeth Norman.

Harold Blair reviewed the book which tells the true story of the captivity of Army nurses and Navy nurses on Bataan and Corregidor after the capture of the Philippines by the Japanese.  Manila was bombed on December 8, 1941.

The book is of special interest locally because Hattie R. Brantley, sister of Jefferson resident Stanford Brantley, was one of the Army nurses captured and held for three years. Ms. Brantley is quoted many times in the book.  Also mentioned in the book is Navy nurse, Edwina Todd, cousin of Jefferson residents Margaret Lewis and Julianne Fischer. The events chronicled in the book span the time from December 8,1941 until the end of the war. in 1945.

The book review was open to the public and took place at the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church.
