In regards to Jefferson High’s massive sports slate ahead, spring has indeed sprung. A leak, at least.
While the forecast rains may not hamper Friday’s season-opening track meet at Paul Pewitt, it has wreaked havoc on the early-season baseball and softball games. Bulldog golfers have felt the effect as well, having to slosh their way through a tourney last week at Oak Forest Golf Course in Longview.
On the diamonds, Johnathan Jolly’s Bulldogs have started out with a 2-0 record in individual games while all their tourney games were rained out. Jefferson pitched its way past Arp, 1-0, in the season opener last week and on Monday walked past Daingerfield, 12-2.
Trace Smith pitched five innings and struck out 12 batters in the match with Daingerfield while Jefferson hitters showed a stead eye in drawing an astounding 14 walks from Tiger pitchers. The Dawgs had only three hits – by Trey Chambers, Brennan Varnell and Damian Warren – in the run-rule shortened affair.
Mason Reeves pitched well in the matchup with Arp and picked up the win while T.J. Foster earned a save in keeping Arp’s Tigers at bay. Varnell singled in the first inning and came home on a Chambers double for the only score and Jefferson hits of the night.
Misty Randolph’s Lady Bulldog squad has had games washed out as well but Jefferson High’s softball team has picked up a win over Paris High in an oft-interrupted start to its season. The ladies will try and find a rhythm in this weekend’s scheduled tourney in Longview (games slated for Thursday and Friday) before next Tuesday’s district date with Waskom.
On the links, Landon Fuquay was the top medalist at last week’s East Texas Christian School Invitational. Making up the Bulldog golf team this year is the quintet of Fuquay, Ashton Younglbood, Gavin Holliday, Haden Satchelben and James Roraback. Junior varsity golfers Will Griffin, Dustin Childress, Kameron Smith, Nate Ames and Zach Baldwin all have the chance to shoot their way onto the varsity ahead of the April 9 District Tournament at Longview’s Pinecrest Gold Course.
Jefferson’s lady linksters include Madilyn Singleton, Katelyn Mutai and Paola Bautista. The girls tee it up next Tuesday in the Lindale Invitational at Garden Valley.
