HALLSVILLE, Texas – Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill’s Red Devils withstood a furious rally by Jefferson in the fourth quarter and overtime to claim a 64-61 victory in last week’s Class 3A-Region II Area Playoff. With the loss, the Bulldogs bowed of the schoolboy basketball playoffs but still have plenty to celebrate after closing the year with a 26-6 record. Treston Dowell’s second year at the helm saw Jefferson post a 26-6 mark – one victory ahead of last year’s 25-5 record.

Jefferson’s top three scorers on the night just couldn’t keep up with their counterparts. The Red Devils’ Coley Posey led all scorers with 20 points while teammates Bryant Roberts (18 points) and Zachary Shipp (17 points) were close behind.

Jefferson senior Curtis Henry had a night to remember in his last game as a Bulldog, leading the team in scoring with 15 points. Kylan Thomas (14 points) and Dee Mitchell (11 points) posted double-digit nights as well.

Jefferson fell behind in the first and spent the rest of regulation chasing Devils up and down the court. Down 15-8 at the end of the first, the Dawgs closed within three, 26-23, at halftime. Chapel Hill took a six-point lead into the fourth before Dowell’s Dawgs charged back and evened things up to force overtime, but Chapel Hill quickly jumped ahead 8-2 in the extra period and was able to withstand Mitchell’s three-pointer with three seconds remaining, making for a 64-61 final.

Kepha Luster was good for nine points and Lyric Rawls six more as Jefferson scored up and down the bench. Taylor Smith (four points) and Eric Gipson (two) rounded out the Jefferson side of the scoreboard.

While the Bulldogs await the release of this season’s 16-3A All-District list, Chapel Hill advanced to the 3A-Region II Quarterfinals where they fell 40-33 to Troup. District 16-3A rival White Oak was eliminated in the second round like Jefferson, dropping a 51-43 decision to Mt. Vernon.
