East Texas Performing Arts presents BookMark, A Two-Act Play About the Second Gospel and Its Author on March 2- 11 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson.

BookMark playwright Jeannette Clift George highlights the miracles, healings and stories of Jesus’ ministry from the recipients and witnesses of His reconciliation. We follow young Mark as he travels through Israel and Rome to receive the first-hand witness from the disciples and their families, the people who walked with Jesus and were touched and healed by His power and love.

“It was in the third grade when I started acting,” said Jefferson High School sophomore Mason McNeely, who is featured as the title character Mark.  “I like the experience it gives to other people. They are actually there in that time period,” he said when asked what he enjoys about acting.

“To see the Book of Mark in a different light,” is what McNeely hopes audiences will enjoy. “To see how someone with Jesus saw everything He did.” BookMark is McNeely’s fifth play with ETPA. McNeely is in the Gifted and Talented program at JHS and hopes to pursue a career in astrophysics.

“This is a beautiful production,” said Director/Actor Sara Whitaker. “The audience will walk with the Apostle Peter and hear the first-hand witness of Jesus’ miracles and healings from the people that experienced it. One aspect of the production I hope audiences will enjoy is the deep humanity within the play’s characters. They have walked, talked and were healed by Jesus Christ; He is their hope. Yet, we see their flaws and brokenness. We see a reflection of ourselves.”

Performances are Friday, March 2, Saturday, March 3, Thursday, March 8, Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10 at 7:30PM with Sunday matinee March 11 at 2:30PM in the First United Methodist Church Youth Building at the corners of Henderson and Line Streets in Jefferson. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at or call 903-634-7665. Tickets are also available at the Marion County Chamber of Commerce, 115 N. Polk St., Jefferson, TX.
