Letter to the Editor – January 11, 2018

On Monday, January 15, one of Marion County’s most important events will occur. The annual Martin Luther King banquet is the most culturally diverse social gathering in our community. People of all religions, races, income levels and political philosophies attend.
The Martin Luther King banquet is hosted by the Marion County Diversified Civic and Social Concerns Organization, better known as MCDCSCO. This organization promotes community relations, supports fellowship, encourages higher education and funds scholarships. MCDCSCO is a service organization. It is not political and has never supported a political candidate or agenda.
MCDCSCO has awarded scholarships to many deserving Jefferson High School seniors. These recipients are currently making their marks in many careers, including education, medicine and entertainment. True to its purpose, MCDCSCO’s scholarship winners are from diverse racial and religious backgrounds. The board awarding these scholarships considers academic achievement, moral character, community service and financial need.
The Martin Luther King banquet is Monday, January 15, 6:00 p,m, at the Marion County Community Center, 512 Haywood Street in Jefferson. This year’s speaker is Charles Jordan, Constituent Services Representative for Congressman John Ratcliffe. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce or from MCDCSCO members.
