Jefferson’s Lady Bulldogs started the New Year on a good foot, knocking off district rival White Oak, 58-47, in Bulldog Gym. The victory on Tuesday night improved the Lady Dawgs to 18-4 on the season but more importantly kept them undefeated in District 16-3A competition (4-0).
Tierra Hines was a huge post presence for Jefferson in the fourth quarter and scored eight of her 12 points to help the Lady Bulldogs pull away from White Oak. Jefferson trailed at the end of each previous quarter but never by more than two points. Hines’ second basket early in the fourth put Jefferson on top 38-37, then she tied the game 39-39 at the free throw line – the last tie of the contest.
Deivya Hodge – the game’s leading scorer with 18 points – added her third three-pointer in the fourth quarter and Nia Garrett was clutch at the free throw line, hitting three of four en route to posting five of her seven points. Elaina Langbartels had a couple of timely buckets too and finished with 10 points.
White Oak’s Asia Robertson had the hot hand early and led the Lady ‘Necks to an 11-10 first quarter advantage. Jefferson fell another point behind at the half (24-22), but it was Hodge that kept them close with her first two three-pointers.
The two teams traded the lead four times in the third quarter, but White Oak’s Robertson put up another five points as Jefferson spread the ball around. Six different Lady Dawgs scored in the quarter to help Jefferson edge closer but still down 37-36.
Jefferson’s Hodge – who came in averaging 11 points per game – led all scorers with 18 and was one of three posting double-digits for the Lady Bulldogs. Hines followed with her dozen while Langbartels chipped in 10 points. Langbartels’ continues to lead the team…
