For the second straight season, Jefferson High’s boys basketball team has had to break out of the gate late owing to an extended football season. For the second straight season, Bulldogs head coach Treston Dowell is doing all he can to get the Dawgs as many games as he can before the start of District 16-3A play next week at Harleton.
Jefferson’s playing well despite not having extended practice time and has a 4-2 mark after playing in the Union Grove Tournament over the past weekend. The Bulldogs started off rough, falling to Kountze (58-57) and Pine Tree (69-63) before rebounding with a pair of victories over Wichita Falls (83-49) and Pine Tree (60-59).
Dee Mitchell takes over as the hot hand this year and led Jefferson with 25 points in the victory over Pine Tree. The senior posted the Bulldogs’ high score in three of the four contests, pumping in 18 against Kountze and 35 in the loss to Pine Tree before hitting 17 against Wichita Falls and 25 more in the rematch with Pine Tree.
