Deck the Downtown

By Carla Bass – City Editor

Remember the magic, as that of a child, when the Christmas Lights began to twinkle and glow on the homes and businesses around the neighborhood? The Jefferson Tourism Board and Marion County Chamber of Commerce are presenting two contests, simultaneously, to bring that feeling to downtown Jefferson.

One challenge will be the contest for businesses. It is not necessary to be a Chamber member, nor does it have to be a tourism based business. The only requirement is to get into the spirit of Christmas.

The same guidelines apply for the second contest. Those entries are for homes and bed & breakfasts.

A set of criteria have been set up for the judging. First will be creativity, so pick a theme and be unique. Next is your lighting. You will need to set them on timers and check your lights daily to make sure your entire scene is properly lit. Last will be your overall presentation that will be bring the whole thing together.

If you choose to enter, complete a form and return it to the Chamber Office by Nov. 20, 2017. All of your decorating must be completed by November 30, 2017. Judges are anonymous, and just like Santa Claus will always be watching.

Any home/bed & breakfast or any business storefront in the downtown area will be accepted in the contests. There will be a $100 first prize and $50 second prize in both of the contests.

As participation increases, would it not be nice to see this spread throughout the entire community? All it takes is a little ingenuity and some lights to bring the glow of the Christmas Spirit back for everyone’s enjoyment. Fill out your form and get busy “Decking the Downtown!”
