Senior Night in The Dawgpound was starting to look a little bleak for Jefferson late when visiting Redwater took a 30-27 lead with just 2:34 remaining in the game. As it turned out, that touchdown was the trigger to a wild finish that saw the Bulldogs rack up three touchdowns in the next 35 seconds to claim a 47-37 victory over the Dragons.
Jefferson (9-1, 4-1) locked on to the District 8-3A second-place playoff seed and now faces Farmersville, the third-place team from District 7-3A . The Fightin’ Farmers finished the year 7-3 but went 4-2 in district competition. The Class 3A-Division I Bi-District Playoff will kick off Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Lindale’s Eagle Stadium.
Dee Black led the life of a lightning bolt on Friday night, dashing 272 yards on only 15 carries. None of those carries were as vital as his last.
Redwater’s Lavondrick Vaughn scored on a three-yard plunge late in the fourth quarter to give the visiting Dragons a 30-27 lead with just 2:34 remaining. Jefferson’s ensuing drive started at their own 25 and ended quickly as Black raced around right end and turned on the jets, scoring at the end of a 75-yard run. Landon Fuquay nailed the PAT and the Dawgs suddenly were back in front 34-30.
Redwater’s Trenton Smith – who had a hand in his team’s 79 kickoff return yards – fumbled Fuquay’s deep kick at the five and Jefferson recovered, setting up a gimmee-putt touchdown plunge by Tyron Williams to put Jefferson ahead 40-30 with 2:10 remaining.
