Overcoming Fear in Troubled Times, Part II
Who or what were they afraid of? John 20:19 says that the disciples were hiding for fear of the Jews. What could the Jews do to them that would make them afraid? The same thing they did to their Lord; kill them.
Like the disciples, that’s why we are afraid; we really don’t know what to do to avoid DEATH. We’re actually afraid of DEATH and things about it we don’t understand. The disciples were afraid of DYING at this point.
Death comes in many forms. Death can mean the end of something good in our lives. Such as, the death of a marriage, the end of a meaningful relationship, loss of a good job, bankruptcy of a business, a career-ending injury, an upcoming major surgery, or even back to school raises our anxiety level. All of these make us afraid in some way.
Like death, fear comes in many disguises as well; anger, anxiety, depression, rage, etc…
There is only one fear we should have; fear God. God says to us in Matthew 10:28, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to
destroy both soul and body in hell.” (KJV)
Luke 12:4 “And I say unto you my friends, be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after
he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.” (KJV) Luke 1:50 reminds us of the benefit in fearing God: “And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation”. I’ve feared God even in my un-saved life. And He granted plenty of mercy. If I received what I deserved, I would be dead and in hell. But His mercy is on them that fear Him.
Another benefit is, it gives you access to God; the most powerful, loving, gracious, merciful person in the universe. Not only does fearing God gives you access to Him, but access to everything He owns; silver, gold, coal, oil, trees, people, etc…!
When you fear God, you have nothing or no one to be afraid of! He’s on your side.
The final question is…
