The Harvey Hurricane Relief Benefit cosponsored by The Hamburger Store and the Opera House Theatre Players, raised over $300 during Sunday’s “Hamburgers, Food and Floorshow” that went on that afternoon for several hours.
Among those participating in the floor show were the Players talented female singing group, The Wonderettes, now called The Polkadots, who sang a number of songs from the 50’s and 60’s period. Riley Cox, 7-year-old pianist of Hallsville, who has only been taking piano lessons about 1-1/2 years, played several fast-paced and slower selections. A local favorite, Jim Moore, sang several signature tunes, while Marcia Thomas gave a 20’s period rendition of a popular song of that time. Patrick Fortune led the entire audience in singing a beloved gospel song. Bennie Davis, the featured entertainer of the show and OHTP’s recent Cultural and Performing Arts awardee, sang a number of audience favorites while accompanying himself on the bass guitar.
About 100 people attended the event which was hurriedly put together so that those who had not donated to the Harvey Relief Fund could have convenient way of doing so. The funds will be given to The Salvation Army for disbursement.
