At a special meeting last Thursday, the Board of Trustees for the Jefferson Independent School District approved the budget for its 2017-2017 year.
The general operating fund was set at $11,711,779. Of that number, $213,100 goes to athletics services, supplies and office expenses, while $80,200 is for band costs. Payroll makes up the majority of the budget.
Last year, the district’s expenses showed a $330,000 deficit, said Superintendent Rob Barnwell.
This time, “we’re breaking even,” he added. “Mainly it’s because of more kids.” He also noted that JISD Business Manager Mike Wood has been a valuable asset in numbers-crunching.
“It’s a blessing to have Mike,” he added. When it comes to figuring out how to balance everything, “it’s not just luck. I appreciate that.”
