Jeff erson’s Opera House Theatre Players will hold their annual membership kickoff party on Labor Day Saturday, September 2, by presenting one of the most unique showbands in all the U.S., “The Texas Gypsies”. The event will be held at the Jefferson Playhouse beginning 7:30 p.m. followed by a wine reception in the gazebo afterwards.
The band’s appearance is being partly funded by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts for the enjoyment of the community and the area.
The group was founded in 2003 by Steve Curry who stumbled across the unique sound of “gypsy jazz” by way of hearing the style of Django Reinhardt and his band, with violinist Stephane Grapelli in films. He purchased a first Gypsy Jazz style guitar and began to learn this style of playing.
One day he met an acoustic bass player and together they brought in two other guitar players who played Western Swing songs made famous by Bob Wills.
