Sometimes the audience score is more important than the Tomatometer. Such is the case with “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” an action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. Loosely inspired by the sincerely romantic 1992 “The Bodyguard” staring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, but in a laugh-out-loud funny, twisted sort of way, the film delivers the perfect end of summer cinematic high.
While only scoring 40% Fresh on the Tomatometer, “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” has a 76% audience score and string of fans posting everything from “it was great FUN” to “so freaking funny … my head hurt coming out of the theatre.”
Sure, the length of the movie might be reduced by half if all the f-bombs were deleted from the script. And the characters and plot are unoriginal and predictable. But, somehow, it doesn’t matter. Jackson, the mega-movie star whose films have made $10 billion to date, makes delivering both action scenes and comic lines while having great on-screen chemistry with Reynolds easy.
“The Hitman’s Bodyguard” was on the 2011 Black List, which is the list of most liked screenplays each year that have not yet been produced. The original script was written as a drama, but only weeks before production began, was quickly rewritten as a comedy.
The consensus among cinematic aficionados is that if you liked the old 1980s and 90s action comedies like “48 Hours” or “Lethal Weapon,” you will love “The Hitman’s Bodyguard.” Reynolds and Jackson deliver one action punch after another with just the right amount of “popcorn movie laughs” to make this a truly entertaining movie for audiences.
