These are the times that try men’s (and women’s) souls. Those who signed up to have their egos massaged or add another line to their obituary will wilt and depart from the fray.

The boring business of writing budgets for cities, schools and counties requires hard work on the part of the folks sitting on these boards.

Teachers don’t get paid. Streets don’t get paved and deputies don’t respond to emergencies unless the county, city or school adopts a budget and sets a tax rate to fund it.

Folks, I’m here to tell you this is difficult.

Does the police department need a new car?

Can we afford another Second Grade teacher?

Can we give deputies and jailers a raise? If we don’t will we be able to keep deputies and jailers or will they run to the big city?

What about Courthouse employees?

If we give everyone a raise…
