Movie Review |“Atomic Blonde” – 2017

By Mica Wilhite

Atomic Blonde“Atomic Blonde” is “John Wick” in a garter belt and heels. Lorraine Broughton, played by the Academy Award-winning Best Actress, is even more lethal than the real life serial killer role (Aileen Wuornos) that earned her an Oscar in 2003. Albeit, this time, Theron is decidedly more alluring and the film “visually sumptuous.”

“Atomic Blonde” is based on the 2012 graphic novel by Antony Johnston, “The Coldest City.” By 2015, the film rights had been purchased by Focus Features with production starting later that same year.

The action in “Atomic Blonde” is more exciting than the actual storyline. Broughton is a top level MI6 field agent tasked with finding a group of double agents before the Berlin Wall is torn down in 1989. The film is as Cold War espionage story set in Berlin, and according to Johnston, is envisioned as a series centered on the James Bond-like Broughton.

The John Wick comparison is apropos because “Atomic Blonde” was directed by David Leitch, who directed but was not credited, in the 2014 “John Wick” film. Leitch also doubles as a stunt coordinator which explains how both films pack so much fastpaced, well-executed action into less than 120 minutes. “Atomic Blonde” has been released amid a pleasantly fresh and original group of films also doing well at the box office (“Dunkirk” and “Girls Trip”), so keeping it on your cinematic radar this month is a good choice. With a 75% Fresh rating on the Tomatometer and solid co-stars like James McAvoy, James Goodman, and Sofia Boutella, it doesn’t disappoint.

“Atomic Blonde” (115 minutes) is showing at the Marshall Cinema with an R-rating for strong violence, language, and sexuality. Call (903) 935-5662 or visit http://www.Jimplecute1848.com for a full list of show times. Then, fasten your seatbelts as you make your way to see this film soon.
