“Baby Driver” is a musically-centered action thriller starring Ansel Elgort as Baby. The all-star cast includes two Academy Award winners for Best Actor, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx, as well as “Mad Man” Jon Hamm. The babyfaced 23-year old Elgort is best known known for his role as Caleb Prior in the “The Divergent” trilogy film series.
The story centers around Baby and his role as the getaway driver for the various heists Doc (Kevin Spacey) masterminds. Because of an accident where he lost both of his parents at a young age, he suff ers from acute tinnitus and is always listening to his iPod to drown out the constant humming he must endure.
The whole movie cuts and moves to the 35-song soundtrack for the film which is the music on Baby’s iPod. A sampling includes Carly Thomas’s “B-A-B-Y” and Kid Koala’s “Was he slow?” “Bellbottoms” by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion provides the cadence for one of the most brilliantly created car chase scenes ever and full demonstrates Baby’s prodigious driving ability.
“Baby Driver” was conceived by director Edgar Wright in 1994 and took twenty-two years bring to the silver screen. It only cost $35 million to make but has already raked in almost $100 million since its release on June 28. Both its audience and Tomatometer scores are north of 90% because of its riveting action and the compelling human dimension Baby’s love story with waitress Deborah (Lily James) showcases.
