“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is second reboot of the Spider-Man film series and quite possibly the best Spider-Man film yet. Tom Holland made his debut as the newest Peter Parker/ Spider-Man in last summer’s “Captain America: Civil War” where he earned a spot as an Avenger, albeit not a full Avenger.
However, Iron Man/Tony Stark returns in this film to monitor Parker’s budding crime-fighting abilities and mentor him into a full Avenger role.
The Spider-Man film series and character are unique within the Marvel Comic Universe in that Peter Parker is not a man. He is an teenage high school boy with all the growing pains of a youthful superhero. However, the juxtaposition of his adolescent real life with his amazing super-hero life is what makes the character and storyline such a deep well of dramatic material well-suited for the big screen.
Michael Keaton plays the super villain Adrian Toomes who is likely the most sympathetic antihero ever. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” begins with Stark’s U.S. Department of Damage Control (D.O.D.C.) putting Toomes’ salvage out of business. Toomes doesn’t try to destroy the Avengers or seek to rule world. He’s simply needs to earn a living to support his family.
Audiences are rewarding this new fun Spidey with over $250 million in box receipts only four days after its release and a fresh 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. These results are impressive given the endless string of remakes and reboots from Hollywood, not all of which have been winners.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” (133 minutes) is showing at the Marshall Cinema with a PG-13 rating for sci-fi violence and action.
