Susan Pierce Ellison Scholarship awarded this year to St. Denis

St. Denis The Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club gave three scholarships to graduating seniors this year. The Lucille Terry Scholarship and the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club Scholarship are given every year. Taylor Fuquay and Hope Humphrey were the recipients of these scholarships.

This year the Garden Club awarded a third scholarship to Mag­gie St. Denis. This is a special scholarship given by friends of Susan Pierce Ellison. Susan, a recently deceased member of the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, was a Jefferson native and a graduate of Jefferson High School. At Jefferson High School, Susan attended Girls’ State, was a cheerleader, a National Honor Society member, and an honor graduate. She graduated from East Texas State Uni­versity in Commerce, Texas. She became an English teacher and taught first in Marshall, then in Bloomburg, and at Atlanta Junior High School for the majority of her teaching years.

Susan married another Jefferson native, Raymond Thomas El­lison at the First Methodist Church in 1968. They loved Jeffer­son and visited life-long friends here often. Both of their families have deep roots in Jefferson, and they had fond memories con­nected to the Jefferson schools and this city. Susan will be great­ly missed by many friends and relatives. Friends from Jefferson, Dallas, Houston, and as far away as Washington, D.C. contributed in Susan’s memory to honor a student of Jefferson High School…
