kneelingBECKVILLE, Texas – If the Jefferson High track team is asked to pick a favorite venue from the2017 season, you’ll forgive them if the answer is “Beckville.”

It’s a little hard to argue their opinion.

Jefferson’s boys claimed the team title at last week’s Area 15/16 Meet and qualified nine athletes for the Class 3A-Region II Meet starting tomorrow in Whitehouse. The Lady Bulldogs finished in the top half of the field and will send seven athletes to Whitehouse. All that’s at stake for each of the competitors is chance to get to the UIL State Meet in Austin.

On the boys’ side of the ledger in Beckville, the Dawgs piled up gold medals in six events – including both sprint relays – en route to posting 107 team points. Sabine’s Cardinals finished second with 82 points while Harmony was next, totaling 74 points. Elysian Fields was District 16-3A’s top-finishing team after Jefferson as the Yellowjacket boys scored 59 points an finished fourth.

Eric Gipson was the busiest Bulldog of all, claiming three gold medals with first-place finishes in the 200-meter dash and as a leg of both sprint relay squads. Damien Hines picked up individual gold medals by winning the Discus and Triple Jump, repeating the rare combo he accomplished in last week’s District 16-3A meet.

T.Q. Jackson and Tyron Williams each picked up golds with the sprint relays while qualifying in one individual event each – Williams earned the final regional berth in the 100-Meter Dash with a fourth-place finish while Jackson took second in the 200-Meter Dash.

Taylor Smith’s gold medal in the long jump put him on the bus to Whitehouse while Kepha Luster’s third-place finish in the 300-Meter Hurdles qualified him also for the regional meet .

Devonte Black, T.Q. Jackson, Eric Gipson and Tyron Williams made up the champion 4×100- Meter Relay team while Kylan Thomas, Gipson, Jackson and Williams comprised the fastest 4×200-Meter Relay squad. Thomas and K’Von Smith are the alternates on the 4×100 team while Black and Smith are the reserves for the 4×200- Meter squad.
